Generac generatorsGenerator repair and maintenance for Memorial homes.
A standby generator is only useful if it starts when the grid goes down, and the grid has gone down for long stretches here. After Winter Storm Uri in 2021 and Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, plenty of Memorial homeowners found out whether their generator would run. Wired is a Generac Prestige Dealer and a family-owned, licensed and insured electrician working out of Tomball. We handle generator repair, generator service and generator maintenance, and we work on all brands, including Kohler.
This page is about units already installed: the ones that have sat unused for years, the ones that fault during an exercise cycle and the ones that need a check before storm season. Shopping for a new standby unit is a separate conversation.
What Memorial jobs look like.
Generator won't start: safe checks first
A few safe checks can save a trip. Make sure the controller is set to AUTO, not OFF. Confirm the generator's own breaker is on. Check that there is fuel, meaning the gas supply is on or the propane tank has some in it. Read any fault code on the display and write it down. Then stop. Do not open the transfer switch, the generator's control compartment or your electrical panel, and never run a portable generator in a garage or indoors. The fault code helps us bring the right parts.
Generac generator repair and other brands
Generac generator repair is the work we know best as a dealer, but a standby generator is an engine, a controller, a battery and a transfer switch whatever the nameplate says. Kohler and other makers fail in similar ways: a battery that cannot crank the engine, a clogged air filter, a fuel supply problem, a transfer switch that does not switch or a controller fault. We diagnose from the fault code and testing, then tell you what failed and what the repair involves before we start.
Oaks, pines and the Memorial yard
Memorial yards are hard on generators in particular ways. Pine needles and oak leaves pile against and into the enclosure, mulch and shrubs creep into the required clearances, sprinklers spray the cabinet and limbs come down in storms. On a service visit we look at the clearance around the unit, the vents and the air intake, and point out what needs trimming or moving. Clearing debris is an easy fix compared with a failed start during an outage. Low spots near Buffalo Bayou deserve a look too, since a unit that has sat in standing water after heavy rain should be inspected before anyone relies on it.
Annual generator maintenance and exercise cycles
Annual generator maintenance generally covers an oil and filter change, the air filter, spark plugs, a battery test, a look at the fuel connection and a test run, along with inspection of the transfer switch by our technicians. Most standby units run a short exercise cycle on a schedule. Memorial neighborhoods and villages may have noise rules, so choose the exercise window with neighbors in mind. The best time for service is before storm season starts, or soon after a long outage.

Generator repair and maintenance questions from Memorial.
Why won't my generator start?
Check that the controller is on AUTO, the generator breaker is on and fuel is available, then note any fault code on the display. Stop there and call us. Do not open the transfer switch or your panel.
Do you repair generators you did not install?
Yes. We service Generac units and other brands, including Kohler, whoever installed them. Tell us the make, model and any fault code when you call so we can plan the visit. Older units can need parts ordered, and we will tell you that up front.
How often does a standby generator need maintenance?
At least once a year, and after a long run during an outage. An engine that sits is more likely to fail when it is needed. Annual maintenance is the simplest way to catch worn parts early.
My generator runs but the house stays dark. What now?
That can point to the transfer switch, a breaker or the connection between the unit and the house. These are not for homeowners to open. Turn the controller off, note what you see and call us.
Should I service my generator before hurricane season?
Yes. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, and service calls fill up when a storm is forecast. A checkup in the spring gives you time to fix anything it finds.
