Why a Standby Generator Needs a Proper Pad

A standby generator is a heavy engine that runs outside for years. What it sits on matters as much as how it is wired.

01

Level and stable for the life of the unit

A generator pad gives the unit a flat, solid surface that will not shift. An engine that sits out of level wears unevenly, and its oil level reads wrong. A unit that rocks when it starts shakes its own connections loose over time. A good pad keeps the generator level through years of weekly tests and long storm runs.

02

Off the dirt and out of the water

Houston soil moves when it gets wet and when it dries out. A generator set on bare ground or a few loose pavers can sink or tilt within a season. A pad also lifts the unit above grass, mud and splash from heavy rain, which keeps water away from the air intake, the wiring and the base of the enclosure.

03

Airflow, vibration and service access

Standby generators pull cooling air in and push exhaust out. A pad that is the right size keeps the base clear so air can move and debris does not pile up. It also gives a technician a clean, stable place to stand and work during maintenance. A solid pad helps reduce vibration carried into the ground.

04

What the manufacturer and inspector expect

Generac, Kohler and other manufacturers call for the unit to sit on a level, stable base, and inspectors look at the pad as part of the generator installation. The pad has to fit the footprint of the generator and sit where the clearance rules allow. Getting the pad right is part of getting the permit passed.

Concrete Generator Pads vs Composite Pads

There are a few kinds of generator base pads. Which one fits depends on the generator, the yard and how high the unit needs to sit.

01

Composite pads

Many smaller air-cooled home standby generators ship with a lightweight composite pad. It sits on a compacted gravel base and is designed for that unit's footprint. It works well on flat, well-drained ground. In yards that hold water or settle, many homeowners choose a heavier concrete pad for more height and weight. We look at the ground before deciding which pad to use.

02

Precast concrete generator pads

A precast concrete pad is made ahead of time, cured and delivered ready to set. It is heavy, flat and sized for common generator footprints. Because it is already cured, the generator can be set on it the same day, without waiting on a poured slab. This is the type of pad we keep in stock at the Tomball showroom.

03

Poured-in-place slabs for larger units

Large liquid-cooled and commercial generators can be too big or too heavy for a standard precast pad. Those units often sit on a slab poured on site and sized to the manufacturer's drawings. We look at the model and the site and tell you which kind of pad your generator needs.

Generator Pad Sizes and Thickness

Pads come in different footprints and thicknesses. The right one depends on the generator model and the ground it sits on.

01

Matching the pad to the generator footprint

The pad has to be at least as large as the generator's base, with the mounting points fully supported. Generac, Kohler and other brands publish the footprint for each model. A Generac generator pad sized for an air-cooled unit will not suit a larger liquid-cooled model. Tell us the make and model, or the model you plan to buy, and we match the pad to it.

02

Choosing pad thickness

We stock concrete generator pads in several thicknesses. A thinner pad works on flat, firm ground that drains well. A thicker pad adds weight and lifts the unit higher, which helps in low spots, soft soil and yards where water collects after a heavy rain. We help you pick a thickness based on where the generator will sit.

03

Raising a generator in flood-prone yards

Plenty of Houston homes sit in areas that see standing water during big storms. If the generator sits in water, the engine, wiring and controller can be ruined, and it fails when you need it. A taller pad, or a raised platform, keeps the unit above the water you have seen in that spot. Some cities and HOAs have rules about this, and we check them.

Where the Generator Pad Goes: Placement and Clearance

Placement decides more than looks. It affects safety, cost and whether the installation passes inspection.

01

Clearance from windows, doors and vents

Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide, so manufacturers and code set minimum distances from windows, doors, vents and other openings. There are also clearances from the house wall, from shrubs and from other equipment like AC condensers. We measure these on the visit before we pick a spot. A pad in the wrong place can mean moving the whole generator later.

02

Close to the gas meter and the transfer switch

The best spot is usually near the gas meter and the electrical meter, with a short run to the transfer switch. Shorter gas and wire runs mean less material, fewer connections and a cleaner installation. Sometimes the shortest run is not allowed because of clearance rules, and we find the best spot that works.

03

Setbacks, HOAs and neighbors

Some cities and HOAs set rules for how close equipment sits to a property line and whether it must be screened from the street. Think about the neighbor's bedroom window too, since the generator runs a short test every week. We help you pick a spot that meets the rules and keeps the peace.

04

Ground preparation under the pad

A pad is only as solid as what is under it. We clear the grass and topsoil, level the ground and build a compacted gravel base before the pad goes down. That base drains water away and keeps the pad from settling. Skipping this step is the most common reason a generator pad tilts after a few wet seasons.

Buying a Generator Pad: Pick-up and Delivery

Concrete generator pads are in stock at our Tomball showroom for homeowners, installers and contractors.

01

Pick-up at the Tomball showroom

You can pick up a pad at 13910 Alice Road in Tomball. Concrete pads are heavy, so bring a truck or trailer rated for the load, and plan on a way to lift and set it at the other end. Call ahead with the size you need and we confirm it is ready.

02

Delivery around Houston

If picking up is not practical, we can arrange delivery to your home or job site. Tell us where the pad needs to go and how the site is set up, such as a gate, a slope or a long walk to the backyard. That way the delivery truck and equipment match the job.

03

For contractors and other installers

Builders, electricians and generator installers buy pads from us for their own jobs. If you are ordering several pads for a project or a run of homes, call us with the sizes and quantities so we can plan stock and delivery. We can talk through footprints and thicknesses for different generator models, so the pad on each job matches the unit going on it. Pick-up and delivery both work for trade orders.

04

Pads included with a Wired installation

When we install a standby generator, the pad is part of the job. We choose the type and thickness, prepare the ground and set the generator level. You do not need to buy or move a pad yourself. The pad placement is planned with the gas line, the transfer switch and the clearance rules all at once, so the inspector sees a finished, level installation that matches the permit.

Fixing, Leveling or Replacing an Existing Generator Pad

Pads under older generators settle, crack or end up in the wrong place. Most of this can be fixed without replacing the generator.

01

A generator pad that has sunk or tilted

If your generator leans, sits lower than it used to or has water pooling around it, the pad or the base under it has moved. That puts stress on the gas line and the electrical connections. We can disconnect the unit, rebuild the base, set a new pad and reconnect it level. Do not try to shim or lift a running generator yourself.

02

Raising a generator after a flood

If water reached the generator during a storm, have it checked before it runs again. If it survived, consider raising it on a thicker pad or platform so it does not happen twice. We handle the disconnect, the new pad, the reconnection and any permit the change requires. A raised unit also needs its gas line and wiring adjusted, which is why this is not a simple lift.

03

Moving a generator to a new spot

Sometimes a generator has to move because of an addition, a new pool, a new window or a clearance problem an inspector found. Moving it means a new pad, new gas and wire runs and often a new permit. We look at the whole job and give you a written estimate before anything moves.
