Fast & Efficient Service

We know that when your generator needs repair, time is of the essence. Our technicians work quickly and efficiently to diagnose and resolve issues, minimizing downtime and getting your generator back up and running fast.

Wired - Your Trusted Partner

Allowing your generator to deteriorate will put you at risk it going out when you need it most. Even in Texas, winters can be cold, and the nights can be exceptionally dark. Wired Electrical and Generators is committed to providing customers with unsurpassed product support. Our technicians are factory-trained and certified to work on most generator products.

Generator Warranty

If you have a warranty, either through Wired Electrical and Generators, Generac or another provider, many repairs may be covered depending on its terms. Batteries, fuses and wear items usually are not. Check with your warranty provider for more details. If we did not install your generator and you are not covered under any warranty, there will be a service fee to schedule one of our technicians to troubleshoot your generator.

Comprehensive Repairs & Maintenance

Ultimately, the best way to prevent generator malfunction is consistent generator maintenance. This will help avoid the rust and corrosion that lead to failures when you need the unit. Contact our friendly office staff with any product maintenance, repair, or warranty questions you may have.

Generator won't start: what an owner can safely check

A standby generator that will not start is stressful, but a few quick checks sometimes explain it. These are look-only checks. Stop there and call us if anything is unclear.

01

Check that the controller is set to AUTO

The control panel has Off, Auto, and Manual settings. A unit left in Off will sit through an outage and never start. If it is not on AUTO, set it there and watch the display.

02

Check the breaker on the unit and the fuel supply

Make sure the main breaker on the generator itself is on, and that the natural gas or propane supply to the unit is open and not empty. A propane tank that has run low is a common reason a generator quits during a long outage. If the fuel is fine and the breaker is on, move to the next check.

03

Read the display and note any fault code

If the controller shows a warning or fault, write down the message or code exactly as it appears. Check that the battery is not obviously dead or the display dark. The code tells us where to start and often saves a trip.

04

Where to stop and call

Never open the transfer switch, the electrical panel, or the generator's wiring compartment. Do not keep trying to start a unit that is cranking and failing, because that wears the battery and starter. Call (713) 467-1125 with what you found.

Common generator problems we repair

Most service calls fall into a handful of causes. Here is what each one tends to look like.

01

Battery and charger problems

A weak or dead battery is the most common reason a standby generator will not start. The battery sits idle for months and wears with age and heat. We test the battery and the charging circuit and replace what has failed.

02

Fuel and gas supply issues

A closed valve, a low propane tank, a gas pressure problem, or old fuel in a portable unit can keep an engine from starting or make it run rough. We check supply, pressure, and the fuel system on the unit. Gas line and meter issues may involve the utility or a gas fitter.

03

Controller faults and alarms

The controller watches the engine and shuts it down to protect it. Alarms usually fall into families, such as low oil, high temperature, overcrank, overspeed, low battery, and sensor or wiring faults. The same alarm can have several causes, so we diagnose before replacing parts.

04

Transfer switch problems and overload

If the generator runs but the house stays dark, the transfer switch is a likely suspect. It is a job for a licensed technician and not an owner, because it connects directly to your home's power. Overload is a separate issue: too much running at once makes the unit shut down or trip, and we can help you see what the unit can carry.

Generac generator repair and every other brand

Wired is a Generac Prestige Dealer, and we also work on other makes. Here is what that means when you call.

01

Generac generator repair

Generac is the brand we see most, and our technicians are factory-trained and certified on it. We handle controller alarms, failed starts, battery and charging problems, and fuel issues. Tell us the model number on the data label and any code on the display.

02

Kohler and other standby brands

We repair and service Kohler and other standby generators, whether or not we installed them. The basics of diagnosis are the same from brand to brand. We check the same things: fuel, battery, controller, engine, and transfer switch.

03

Portable generators

Portable generators need their own care, especially fuel that has sat too long, carburetors that gum up, and units that sit unused through the year. We can look at portables too, so call and tell us the brand and what it is doing. For powering a house from a portable, have a licensed electrician set up a proper connection, and never plug a generator into a wall outlet.

Annual generator maintenance versus repair

Most of the calls we get could have been prevented. A planned visit is easier than a failure during an outage, and it gives you a record of how the unit is doing.

01

What a generator service visit covers

A service visit usually includes changing the oil and filters, checking the spark plugs and the battery, inspecting the engine and enclosure, and running the unit to confirm it starts and carries load. We also look at the transfer switch and check for fault history on the controller. You get a note on what we found.

02

How often to schedule generator service

Standby generators are generally serviced once a year, and more often with heavy use. The best time is before storm season, so any problem is fixed before you need the unit. If you have not had yours looked at in a while, book a visit.

03

Maintenance, repair, and your warranty

Maintenance keeps the unit healthy and repair fixes what has already failed. If you have a warranty, keep your service records and check the terms with your warranty provider before approving any work. We can walk through what is likely covered and what is not.

When to call and when you can wait

Not every generator problem needs a rush call, but a few should not wait.

01

Call right away

Call if the unit fails during an outage, if you smell gas, hear a loud or unusual noise, or see smoke or leaking fluid. If you smell gas, leave the area and call the gas company or 911 first. Those are safety issues first and repairs second.

02

Can wait for a regular visit

A warning light on a fault that cleared, a unit that runs its weekly test fine, or a maintenance reminder can wait for a scheduled visit. Write down what you saw and when. It helps us diagnose it.

03

Before storm season

The best time to call a generator service near you is when the sky is clear. Technicians get busy when a storm is coming, and parts can be harder to find. A tune-up before hurricane season costs you less stress than a repair during one.

What a generator repair visit looks like

Most people have never had a generator repaired before. Here is how a visit usually goes, from the first call to the test run.

01

The phone call

When you call (713) 467-1125, we ask for the brand, the model, how old the unit is and what it is doing or not doing. If the display shows a code, read it to us exactly. If you know who installed it and whether it has a warranty, tell us that too. This helps the technician bring the right parts and tools on the first trip instead of coming back for them.

02

Finding the cause on site

The technician starts by reading the controller history, then checks the battery, fuel supply, oil, wiring and the transfer switch. A fault code points to an area, not always a single part, so the goal is to prove the cause before replacing anything. Guessing with parts costs you money. Testing first is slower by a few minutes and cheaper in the end.

03

Your go-ahead before the repair

Once we know what is wrong, we explain it in plain English, tell you what the repair involves and what it will cost, and wait for your approval. If the fix is covered by a warranty, we tell you what we expect is covered and what is not. If the part is not on the truck, we order it and schedule the return trip with you.

04

Testing before we leave

A repair is not finished until the generator proves it. After the fix, we run the unit, check that it reaches the right speed and voltage, and, with your approval, test a real transfer so the house moves onto generator power and back. We clear the old faults and make sure the controller is back in AUTO, then show you what we did.

Repair or replace an older generator

Sometimes the honest answer is that a generator is worth fixing. Sometimes it is not. These are the things we weigh with you.

01

When a repair makes sense

Batteries, chargers, spark plugs, sensors, starters and many controller faults are normal repairs on a generator that is otherwise in good shape. If the engine runs well, the enclosure is solid and parts are easy to get, fixing it is usually the right call. A repair plus regular maintenance can keep a sound unit ready for many more storm seasons.

02

Signs replacement may be the better call

We start talking about replacement when the engine itself is worn out, the alternator has failed, the enclosure is rusted through, or the same problems keep coming back. A unit that was too small for the house from day one is another reason. We show you what we found and let you decide. Nobody should feel pushed into a new generator.

03

Parts for older and discontinued models

Older generators, and brands that are no longer common in the Houston area, can be hard to find parts for. When a part is discontinued, we look for an approved replacement before we suggest a new unit. If a part simply cannot be found, we tell you that up front so you can plan, rather than waiting on an order that may never arrive.

04

What changes with a new unit

If you do replace, a new generator may fit the existing pad, gas line and transfer switch, or it may need changes. We check all of it on the visit. New air-cooled Generac installs from Wired come with a free 10-year warranty, and financing is available. Every house is different, so a free visit gets you a written estimate. We also handle the permit for the new install.

Generator repair during and after a storm

Storms are when generators work hardest and when repair calls stack up. A few things are worth knowing before the next one.

01

If the generator quits during an outage

Check the controller first. Is it in AUTO, and is there a code on the display? Check that the gas or propane supply is on and that propane has not run low. Do not open the generator or the transfer switch. Then call us. Our phones are open 24/7, and the code you read us helps us decide what to bring and how urgent the visit is.

02

Flood water and storm damage

If flood water reached the generator or the transfer switch, do not start it or reset it. Water inside the engine, the alternator or the controls can cause serious damage or a shock hazard. Leave it off and have it inspected before it runs again. The same goes for a unit hit by a falling limb or debris. Look from a distance and call.

03

Long outages wear on a generator

Running for days at a time is hard work. Oil gets used faster, filters load up and small problems show up under heavy use. If your generator carried the house through a long outage, plan a service visit once the grid is back, even if it seems fine. Catching worn oil or a weak battery now is easier than finding it during the next storm.

04

Why calling before the season helps

When a hurricane is in the Gulf, everyone calls at once and parts get scarce across Houston and surrounding areas. A unit that has been checked before the season is far less likely to need a repair during it. Customers on a Shield Protection maintenance plan also get storm priority, which is worth thinking about if you rely on the generator for medical needs.

Questions we get every week

Ask us anything. These come up most.

Why won't my generator start?

The usual causes are a dead battery, a fault the controller is showing, a closed fuel or gas supply, or a tripped breaker on the unit. Check that it is set to AUTO and note any code on the display, then call us at (713) 467-1125.

Do you repair generators you did not install?

Yes. We repair and service all brands, whether or not we installed them.

Where can I find generator repair near me?

Wired is a local shop in Tomball with trucks serving Houston and the area around it. Call (713) 467-1125 and we tell you when a technician can be there. We are open 24/7.

What does a generator service visit include?

A visit usually covers oil and filters, spark plugs, the battery, an inspection of the unit and enclosure, and a run test under load. We also check the controller for fault history and look at the transfer switch. We tell you what we found and what needs attention.

Do you service Kohler and other brands, not just Generac?

Yes. We repair and service all brands, standby and portable, whether or not we installed them. Tell us the brand and model when you call.

How often should a standby generator be serviced?

Once a year is the usual schedule, and more often if the unit runs a lot. Doing it before storm season is best. Regular service also makes failures during an outage far less likely.

What does a fault code on my Generac mean?

Fault codes point to the area of the problem, such as battery, oil, temperature, speed, or wiring, but not always the exact cause. Write the code down exactly and call us. We can often tell you what it means and what to do next over the phone.

How much does generator repair cost?

It depends on what failed. A dead battery or a clogged air filter is a small job. A failed controller, starter or alternator is a bigger one, and the brand, model and age of the unit change what the parts cost. Whether a warranty covers it matters too. We find the cause first and tell you the cost before any repair starts. Every house is different, so a free visit gets you a written estimate.

My generator failed its weekly exercise. Is that urgent?

Treat it as urgent if storm season is near or someone in the house depends on power for medical equipment. A failed exercise means the generator may not start during a real outage. Write down any code on the display, check that the controller is in AUTO and that the fuel supply is on, then call us at (713) 467-1125 so we can schedule a technician.

Should I repair or replace my old generator?

If the engine is healthy, the enclosure is solid and parts are available, repair is usually the better value. If the engine is worn out, the alternator has failed, the unit is rusted through or the same problems keep coming back, replacement starts to make sense. We show you what we found and give you both options so you can decide.

Is my generator repair covered by warranty?

It depends on who issued the warranty and its terms. Many repairs are covered, while batteries, fuses and normal wear items usually are not. Have your model, serial number and service records ready when you call. As a Generac Prestige Dealer, we can tell you what we expect is covered on a Generac before you approve the work.

Is it safe to run a generator after flood water reached it?

No. If water got into the generator or the transfer switch, leave it off and do not reset it. Water in the engine or the electrical parts can cause damage or a shock hazard. Have a technician inspect it, dry it out or replace parts as needed, and test it before it runs the house again.

Do you repair generators during a hurricane or a long outage?

Our phones are open 24/7, and we send technicians out as soon as it is safe and one is free. During a major storm, demand across the Houston area is high, so there can be a wait. Shield Protection maintenance plan customers get storm priority. The best way to avoid a storm repair is a service visit before the season.
