Pool light not working? What to check, and what to leave alone
A dark pool light is one of the most common calls we get. Some causes are simple. Others involve water and electricity together, which is never a do-it-yourself job.
Check the GFCI, the breaker and the switch
Pool lights are protected by a GFCI, which may be a breaker in the panel or a reset button on an outlet or control near the equipment. If the light is dead, see whether the GFCI has tripped or the breaker is off. Also check the wall switch, the timer and any pool control system. If the GFCI resets and the light works, you may be fine. If it trips again, stop and call an electrician.
A GFCI that keeps tripping is a warning
A GFCI trips when it senses current leaking somewhere it should not go. On a pool light, that usually means water has gotten into the fixture, the cord is damaged or a connection has corroded. Resetting it over and over, or replacing it with a plain breaker, removes the one device keeping people in the water safe. Leave it off and have the light checked.
Burned-out lamp, water in the fixture or a failed cord
When the power is fine but the light stays dark, the cause is in the fixture. An older lamp may simply have burned out. A fogged lens or water inside the housing means a failed seal. A cord nicked or chewed in the conduit can also fail. These repairs require pulling the fixture from the wall of the pool, which should be done by a licensed electrician.
Never open a pool light while it is in the water
A pool light should never be opened, loosened or worked on with power on, and it should never be opened underwater. Do not swim while a pool light is flickering, trips the GFCI or shows water inside the lens. If anyone feels a tingle or a shock in the pool or spa, get everyone out, keep them out and call an electrician right away.
Pool light replacement and repair
Pool light replacement sounds like changing a bulb. In practice it means lifting a sealed fixture out of the pool wall and resealing it properly.
How a pool light fixture comes out
Most inground pool lights sit in a niche, a housing built into the pool wall. The fixture is held by a screw and has extra cord coiled behind it, so it can be lifted out and brought up to the deck without draining the pool. With the power off at the source, we remove the fixture, work on it on dry ground and reseat it with a fresh seal.
Replacing the gasket, lamp or whole fixture
Some lights only need a new lens gasket and lamp. Others are too corroded or too old to reseal and are better replaced as a complete fixture. We look at the housing, the cord and the condition of the niche and tell you which repair makes sense. A pool light that leaks once usually leaks again if it is just patched.
Replacing a pool light cord
When the cord inside the conduit is damaged, the right repair is a new continuous cord from the fixture to the junction box. Splicing a pool light cord partway along is unsafe, and it is the kind of shortcut that leads to shocks and failed GFCIs. We pull the old cord out and run a new one in one piece.
Pool light niche repair
The niche is the shell the fixture sits in. A cracked niche, a stripped screw hole or a damaged bonding connection can keep a new light from seating or grounding properly. Some niche problems can be repaired in place, and some need pool work beyond the electrical side. We tell you what we find and what it takes to fix it right.

LED pool light vs incandescent
An LED pool light runs much cooler, uses far less power and lasts much longer than an incandescent lamp. That matters in a pool, because every lamp change means pulling the fixture and resealing it. LEDs also offer color options and brighter, more even light. Incandescent lights still work, but most owners switch to LED the next time the light fails.
Color-changing LED pool and spa lights
Color-changing LED lights let you pick a single color or run through color shows. Many can be controlled from a switch, a remote or a pool automation system. If you have more than one light in the pool and spa, matching fixtures that work together give a much better result than a mix of old and new. We confirm the lights and controls work together before install day.
Low voltage vs line voltage pool lights
Pool lights come in low voltage versions that run through a transformer and line voltage versions that run on household power. Which one you can use depends on the existing niche, the wiring and the equipment. A replacement has to match what the pool was built for, or the system has to be updated. We confirm that before ordering a fixture.
Can you install pool lights in an existing pool?
Adding a new underwater light to an existing pool usually means pool construction work, since a niche and conduit have to be built into the shell. That is a bigger project than a replacement. Lighting around the pool, such as deck, landscape and step lighting, is often a simpler way to light an existing pool. We can talk through both at the visit.
Pool and spa electrical safety: bonding, GFCI and code
Pool lighting is wet-location electrical work. Most of what keeps swimmers safe is hidden in the ground and behind the equipment.
What pool bonding does
Bonding ties the metal parts of a pool together, including the light niche, ladders, rails, pump motor and reinforcing steel, so they all sit at the same electrical potential. That keeps current from flowing through a swimmer between two metal parts. Bonding is easy to damage during remodels or equipment changes. We check the bond at the light and the equipment when we work on a pool.
GFCI protection for pool and spa lights
Code requires GFCI protection for line-voltage pool and spa lights, and we test it on every pool light job. The GFCI trips fast when it detects leakage, before a dangerous shock can happen. Older pools sometimes have lights without it. Adding GFCI protection is one of the most important upgrades on an older pool, and we test it as part of any pool light work. If you have never pressed the test button on your pool GFCI, that is a good habit to start.
Junction boxes, transformers and equipment pads
The pool light cord runs to a junction box or transformer that has to be mounted at a safe height and distance from the water. Equipment pads also hold pumps, heaters and controls that share the circuit. We look at the whole path from the panel to the light, because a good fixture on a bad connection still fails. We tighten, clean or replace what we find.
Why pool light work is never DIY
Pool light repair kits are sold online, and the videos make it look simple. What they skip is the bonding, the GFCI, the seal and the cord. A mistake in any of them can put current in the water. Pool and spa lighting should be done by a licensed electrician who tests the work before anyone swims. If something feels wrong at the pool, the safest move is to leave the light off and call.

The underwater light is only part of the picture. The spa, the deck and the pool house all need light that is safe around water.
Spa and hot tub lighting
Spa lights follow the same safety rules as pool lights, with GFCI protection and bonding. Built-in spas usually have a niche light like the pool, while portable hot tubs have lights in the shell and need a properly protected power supply. We wire the spa so its lights and the pool lights can be controlled separately or together. A spa light that fails gets the same careful repair as a pool light.
Pool deck and step lighting
Steps, deck edges and the path from the house to the pool are where people trip at night. Low step lights and soft path lighting make them easy to see without glare on the water. Every fixture near the water has to be rated for wet locations and kept at the right distance, and we plan that from the start.

A pool house or covered patio usually needs lighting, fans and outlets that can handle humidity and splashing. Damp or wet-rated fixtures and GFCI-protected outlets are the starting point. We match the lighting to the deck and landscape so the whole backyard looks like one plan. What drives pool light replacement cost
The cost depends on the type of light, whether it is a lamp, gasket or full fixture replacement, the condition of the cord and niche and whether bonding or GFCI protection needs updating.
